Have you ever been let go? If so, think about what you would have needed that could make the transition easier. The fact that it’s a full month could cause more tension on the team, so be mindful of that.
Just be as upfront and tactical as possible. Provide insight into why this is happening. Inform them you’d be willing to be a reference if possible (pending cause of termination of course) and try and make the transition as seamless as possible. Losing a job comes with shame and guilt and loss of self esteem. As long as there is empathy involved, while providing honesty, think that goes a long way.
It will be, but the fact that you care a lot about that will come through.
That sucks to hear he had the brunt of a toxic manager and still stuck it out. 5 years is a long time.
This is well above and beyond, and unsure of the conflict here, but if you know anyone potentially hiring for his skill set, that could be a very supportive way of showcasing how valued he is.
And once the news is broken, just listen. Keep your door open for their last month, put in the extra time. It’s odd to keep it for a month though - tripping me up. If it were me I’d be sending my resume out and trying to take meetings so feel free to be an extra hand and be human.
Make it clear it’s a layoff and not a performance issue. And if your workplace is under a holding company, see if you can help them find a new job within the network. Allow them to take remaining PTO after 2 weeks instead just having a month’s notice, with AD1 points out might have its issues.
This is all awesome feedback. He’ll be given the month to either wrap up work or apply for other open roles in the network, which I’ll obviously support as much as possible. If after the month he’s unable to find a new position, he’ll get severance and get paid out for unused PTO. I talked to the President this morning about how I’m just having a hard time with it and she pointed out that this is the best case scenario for losing your job, and he’ll be leaving with great references and everything. I just know, as AD1 pointed out, it’ll be tough for his self esteem and I want to do this as respectfully as possible. Thanks again for the advice, it’s really helping me wrap my head around this.
