I just booked my first full week off in ages, but I’m feeling anxious instead of excited. My team is so short-staffed right now, but I promised my wife I'd take some PTO. I need the break, but at the same time, I feel guilty about leaving extra work behind. So I'm thinking I'll log in every morning to help a little, just in case. Would you do that, or unplug completely?

Unplug completely. Your wife is more important.

I would unplug completely.

I get feeling obligated if you should never let it get in the way of enjoying yourself. Unplug and relax, the work isn’t going anywhere, everyone needs a vacation.

NO, you should UNPLUG.

(1) you're no good to your team unless you refresh yourself somehow (with time off), and

(2) one reason that employees MUST take periodic time off is so that in their absence, the company has the chance to see if anything "falls apart" (e.g. proof of embezzlement pops ups, that would otherwise be covered up if the employee was ALWAYS at work)

#2 of course probably does not apply to you, BUT you need to respect that the company has reasons for INSISTING on employees taking some time off.

Partners - Do you ever take vacations?

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.

I need help. I'm dealing with multiple losses in the same week and having a hard time... I took some time off from work but I have no motivation to do anything. I don't want to go back to work and don't care about my work right now. I want to quit but I don't want to make a rash decision but need a long break. It's also not fair to my team that I can't give it my 100%. What can I do?

What holiday party did you get?
Anyone living close to an office, got a holiday party with food and drinks, and the venue started open for them until around midnight. Our remote workers got a one hour party w a DJ and trivia that let you win gift cards. Yeah it was nice to win a gift card but I found it lame in comparison to hanging out with my team in real life.
