I would have avoided confrontation when I was younger and either get a manager to handle it or ignore it. I even changed jobs once because it got too much. Now I'm old and grumpy 😂 I have no problem putting people on the spot if they are going to behave that way. "Hey, I've heard you've been discussing X about X. Hopefully in the future you will refrain from these conversations and help maintain a professional workplace"
I've never really been in the position where I've felt like I needed to. I just try to stay out of all the gossip and drama as much as possible. I think being direct and succinct is probably the way to go. "Hey, XYZ is not appropriate, stop talking about it."
You address it with everyone in one room so NO ONE feels it’s directed to them. Just tell everyone you will no longer accept gossip and if they choose to keep having in their life and work place, they can go elsewhere for work.
I don't, I let those rumors go. If someone wants to take so much time out of their day to gossip about little Ole me and make stories up, well I bet you those stories are going to be way more interesting than my actual life. If someone wants to take the time to find out if those rumors are true or not good for them
I'm usually amazed that people have time for that. When there are messages from patients in the in baskets that are 4 days old and have to even been looked at, are we even caring who said what to whom??
I guess some of us are.
Not helpful to your question, I know.

Ignore for the most part
We are having issues with this as well. I believe that while we can’t stop others from gossiping, we can refuse to tolerate it in the workplace. It creates a hostile work environment when people hear other members of their team talking about them behind their back. I believe it’s best to inform the entire team that that kind of behavior will not be tolerated at work. Follow the golden rule and treat others the way you’d like to be treated.
