I left public accounting in 2022 to help care for a sick parent and have a 2-year resume gap. I'm CPA licensed and had 5 years at a mid-size firm before that. Recruiters keep ghosting me after the first call and I'm just thinking whether the gap in my resume is killing me or am I simply just applying to the wrong places? How do I even explain the gap if asked about it?

if you were a full time caretaker for your sick parent for the 2 years that you didn’t have another job, you should fill that out on your resume. sell it as a part of your personal skills development.

I had the same situation and told them I went to Yale. After they told me how impressed they were, I told them "that's great, because I really need this yob."

Apply to a Federal Govt a accounting job. They computer score your resume and because of the Firm and CPA along with 5 years will score well. Get that going and you might be able to jump to a Firm

Explaining that you took care of parent for 2 years is not the issue. The issue is that your knowledge is stale since you have not been in the industry for all that time. Everyone since has moved on and up skilled. You may have to step down to come back in.

Also you’re saying 2 years, but it’s been more than that since 2022. Did you do something else since?

Put caregiver on your resume and explain the tasks you did, trust me, being a full time caregiver has a lot of different tasks that help with people skills

like

Definitely put it on your resume as “intentional gap - family caregiver” - no further details required but you need to outline this or ppl will make assumptions unfortunately..

I would explain it exactly like that. Have you considered consulting/temp work? Are you applying directly to the company portal or via external recruiters?

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.
