I think it was the emphasis you put on it “bottom-tier performer” instead of simply saying the employee has poor performance. Just be kind in front and behind ppls back
My girlfriend also got quite upset at this and told me to stop saying things like this in the future. From my perspective I think people can be good at and poor at different things. That employee was not a malicious person but if I pulled this kind of performance in my old job (consulting) I would be transitioned after two projects max. I genuinely do not see any issue with calling their performance “bottom-tier”. For example I’m absolutely trash at art and cooking and would have no qualms with people saying I’m a trash-tier artist or cook. I’d embrace it!
Yeah agreed, but she's probably projecting a bit and maybe worries that people might speak about her like that. Some people can be far more insecure than others and it sounds like she might be. Personally, I couldn't care less if people think I'm bottom tier at something, but that requires a certain level of confidence.
If you're looking for resolution, I'd maybe ask for more clarity on why it's bothered her so much. Make sure to explain that you don't think that the individual's poor performance is a reflection of their value as a person, just that they aren't good at this particular thing?
I guess she felt triggered (?) and maybe she is not aware of business expressions, it’s quite common to use that imo so maybe try to explain it to her and that your intention is not to offend the person. Also I would suggest to try where she is coming from.
