Hi OP... I’m worried about you. Can’t tell if it is self-deprecating humor, or a sincere cry for help. First... breathe. You WILL get through this, just like everything else you’ve gotten through. Second, go talk to a therapist. Even a cheap one... you need to get the dark words and thoughts in your mind, out (I prefer in front of another human being) because if they keep swirling around inside your noggin it will get bad.
The change career comment isn’t a bad one, and it doesn’t have to be permanent. You just need to do something so you can feel better about yourself. To that, remember your work/vocation doesn’t define you. You are a valuable human even if you aren’t is a stable advertising job right now. (And there has never been any such thing as a “stable advertising job”.)
This season (and I know it has been a long one for you) will pass, don’t give up. The saying goes... “if you’re going through hell, keep going.” And if it isn’t obvious that means the only way to get out of hell is to not stop, but keep pressing forward.
We believe in you.
Have you considered pivoting? I began my career as a creative and realized there weren’t enough good jobs to provide the upward mobility I needed to maximize my income. Pivoted into creative strategy and have had tons of opportunity. If you want to stay in creative, I’d suggest beefing up social / digital / content creds. The more you can create without outsourcing, the better. For example, learn Spark AR. The more you can position yourself as a modern creative - or better yet, a creator - the more you’ll stand out.
job hunting is the most exhausting, demeaning, depressing experience. I hope you have people you can talk to. If you don’t, there are internet strangers who will be a friend to you, me included. ❤️
I was unemployed from spring 2019 to just a few months ago. Nearly two years. You're not alone, and you gotta keep a bit of faith.
Can you work your network when you see jobs posted? Cold applying to LI listings will be depressing as it’s often like a black hole. I think people are open to helping moreso right now given the situation, its not always comfortable to ask but most everyone has been there and can relate. Keeping a regular exercise regimen is critical, and maybe volunteering a few hours a week outside the house to have your brain focus on something else will be helpful.
Hey OP, I got laid off in December. You are not alone. Keep your head up. I’m rooting for the both of us.
Really sorry to hear you’re struggling. I’ve found I get a better response by following up with either another creative on the team or the actual job poster with some sort of note letting them know I recently applied and why I’d love to work for them. Doesn’t hurt to throw in a bit of humor, some kudos, etc. I’ve had a lot more responses that way. Maybe you already do this but thought I’d throw that out there. Rooting for you. You will land something - don’t lose hope.
Have you tried a temp agency or finding contract work?
