Exact same dilemma. I think you need to be ready to actually leave if it doesn't pan out or else they'll stop taking you seriously.
Yeah that's what I was thinking. This sounds sad, but I've honestly considered asking for a title bump with no pay increase. Then after like 6 months of proving my capability at that next level I'd make a lateral move at a higher rate somewhere else.
It makes sense if you want the title asap but it also devalues you and your work. The better option might just be to move at a higher rate/level somewhere else imho.
Well I should clarify, this isn't a company I want to work for much longer. But I want a title bump before I leave so I don't have to make a lateral move at my current level.
I mean.. you could always ask before threatening. Freeze or no freeze, that's decided by people, rules get bent all the time.
Have something to go to before you threaten.
Don't threaten, ever. Even if the strategy works, youve damaged the relationship with your boss and company
Don't compromise OP. Don't give them a solution of title without pay. Write down why you're ready and bring it to the powers that be. You got this.
Yes, absolutely you can and should.
Your ego is telling you 'they'd be absolutely be screwed'. Reality is you are replaceable and the train would be on the tracks regardless of your presence. Your own insecurities made you ask this question. Make the threat... ask for the promotion and see if they want to retain you... roll those entitled dice! Good luck!!!!
@publicis1, normally I'd agree with you, but we have lost so many people and there's a hiring freeze and I'm literally the only one who is able to work on this account. So either they keep me working 60 hours a week, or they lose me and everyone else has to work 80 hours a week. Feel like they'd be pretty screwed without SOMEONE in my role. Doesn't have to be me. But it would take too long to hire and onboard someone else for this position.
With those circumstances you should just leave. Take your expertise and go somewhere where you'll be valued. All the best.
Just ask for a raise, if they say no, leave. Threats to a place you're unhappy with with just make it more miserable.
