I am seeing stellar returns and extremely low expense ratios but apparently since they're quantitatively managed algorithms, they don't account for things like corona for example.

Just rent a car why would you take ownership of a car just for 3-4 months?
Rising Star
Go to car rental company. Do 30 day rentals.
Rising Star
I just priced out an economy class car for 30 days and it was $760. RAV4 $869. This was with Avis.
Another tip, avoid airport car rental locations. If you don’t have a choice there, talk to a manager and see if you can get the airport charges removed from your rental
If you’re on a trip can’t you expense this? Or at least your Ubers for your Monday to Friday travel? And just rent or uber for the weekends you really need it
Car depends on the city. If you’re going to NYC, DC, Chicago, or Boston, you don’t need a car.
Anyway, your idea is not good. Buying a car will be a nightmare without a credit history and US drivers license. Just don’t do it.

Turo or rental
“Car is important in the US”. Quite a statement that really depends where you’ll be based. Arguably more economical to use Ubers and targeted shorter rentals, after parking and insurance.

Work with your company’s travel/relocation team. They likely have a process already in place for this.

Check Nextdoor in the area you are headed. I just saw two 2007 Japanese cars in great shape w/ relatively low mileage posted for $800, $1000. Keep in mind the legal things you have to take care of w/ registration etc. as well as insurance and have a mechanic check it first.
Swapalease or Leasetrader is likely the lowest cost route. I’m sure BCG has good rates for long term rentals from a traditional rental companies. Absolutely makes no sense to buy a car for 3-4 months.

Where are you coming from? Have you driven in US before? How much did it cost in insurance in the past?
Car market in the US is insane right now (like everything else) probably better off renting. 2K for 3 months isnt bad IMO. I recently took a trip to the UK and the rental was close to 1K per week.
If BCG sent you here, we’ll cover a long term car rental in the states.
Ask ChatGPT /perplexity to help decide

Funny enough, ChatGPT and perplexity are quite useless for this type of analysis. They don’t have an access to pricing of the different options. That also fail at supposedly a much easier task of calculating a sunk cost of purchasing and selling a car (eg taxes, fees, gap between dealer price and trade in price…). It’s not a real intelligence (at least yet).
