DONT tell them. The less you say the better.
If he is pressing you on a "what's wrong with you"-your answer is nothing.
If he is doing this in front of other OR questioning your temperament to be a leader/run your company, that is another story. If that's the case I would tell him to look at your track record of success and tell him you have a whole list of names of people you have worked with for x number of years who would all vouch for your temperament as a leader.

He sounds miserable tbh
Yes. And it’s always some slippery person you can’t report to HR anyway. I’m curious to hear what other people post about this.
I’ve worked with other C suite execs who talk crap like this. CEO can call them out if they choose but you’re right , no intervention with HR
Thanks for the comments, it’s helpful to get this perspective.
Some other context - he is German, where there is a cultural bias towards both perfectionism and directness. He is also a salesy type guy who is hyper focused on appearances. How he and his team are perceived places highest importance even above productivity.
It seems I need to make a hard decision on whether I work with this guy long term.
Use a gaslighting technique with him.
Agree with M1 - turn the tables on him and play his behavior back to himself. Jerks like this need a taste of their own medicine. Do NOT disclose anything - they would not know the difference anyways between that and a mortal flaw.
In my experience dealing with this particular type of person, this goes two ways if you turn this back on them: 1) they have a hard time eating the same shit they deal and you feel better at least; 2) they respect you more.
Update - the next time he criticized me about a mannerism I just ignored his comments as they weren’t relevant to the work. This just got him agitated to the point that I realized the problem is definitely with him. After talking with others, we concluded classic narcissist. He has to be the most important person in the room, and sometimes that means pushing some people down around him any way he can.
Forgetfulness , like brain fog? Btw, tell this person this is unacceptable.
Brain fog may play a part.
For example I will ask him a question about a topic that he already covered and he will say “I told you this already”. (Which he may have in a long rambling diatribe, or it’s my way of asking him to explain something that doesn’t make sense to me).
I’d like to assume he’s just a defensive jerk, but I don’t want to jump to the conclusion that at my level there is no room for the errors that naturally come from adhd. He has high expectations of my performance - as he should. But I can and do get the job done. Perhaps not in the way he expects.
