Yes! Do it. This is the one time you can take that break in a 30 year or so career without it being questioned. The time with children goes by so fast. Don't miss it for work. The work will always be there. Kids are only babies for a brief moment.
I took 14 weeks several years ago, didn't change my progression at the firm. I am extremely happy I made the decision and have never regretted it for a second.
Yes i took 4 weeks no problems.
Do you need to take all 16? Like honestly is it necessary? My manager is taking 8 but in bits and pieces not all at once.
I think taking it in spurts definitely doesn't make sense. What can do get done working for 1 week then going off again for a week? Take off 16, then come back to the team full time.
EY gives 16 weeks as well. Both men and women
@OP it's a perk. They shouldn't give it if it's unreasonable to take it. If the company is going to hold it against you for utilizing the benefit packages they give you then maybe that's not a company you should be with long term...
Eh I'd rather not do things that hurt my chances for Partner
Obviously if you miss 16 weeks of busy season then yes you'll be set back a year (you don't get credit for working when you're not there). Otherwise it should be fine.
My kid will be far better off with me as a Partner and can pay for college than with me around for 16 weeks as a newborn
There are a lot of workaholics in my group. I'd be interested to hear from fellow Managers and Senior Managers, because, Supervising Senior, there are some politics out there...even if you don't agree.
^I understand the politics OP. I've been in the game for 6+ years (work in consulting where titles are different than B4). Agree there are politics, but I'm saying that Partner promo politics do not start this early. You're nowhere close to partner at the current moment. Have at least a minimum of 4 years if you're a superstar. Ultimately this benefit you're taking of being with your kids is not going to be what makes or breaks you 4+ years down the line.
Manager here. Questions to adequately opine further: which group? Are you on an engagement with other M/SM who can step in? When would you be out? Busy season or dead time? I don't think taking 1 week on 1 week off is helpful but what if you took say, 8 weeks off fully and then took off like Tues/Thursday each week?
^Well BDO doesn't give more than 2 weeks do they? Do you have any other option?
Thanks EY4. I will aim for that.
Based on Crowe Horwath's logic, the mother should also have only 8 weeks
@FR&A S1 - would said man be just sitting at home watching TV, or helping his wife take care of the baby? Big difference.
Wrong, guys didn't take PTO in the 1950s when their wives gave birth
16 weeks in a row sends the wrong message like it or not
Do you always take things at face value or are you just being naive on this point
Are you willing to work 5 to 10 hours a week more to cover the clients of somebody taking 16 weeks off? If you do a great job and they want you to stay on the account what happens? Are you willing to invest 30 hours in PRD to get up to speed on a transaction that somebody was working on? Are you willing to take on some additional talent / mentoring responsibility? How will you handle extra time in the codes to get up to speed on things? Are you confident the overworked/caring/ stressed out managers and senior managers will recognize your extra effort. All interesting questions
If you think the firm is hiring people or maintains headcount for this policy , you are naive. Same amount of people same work. These issues don't arise when you are talking about 7 to 10 days. 16 weeks is different. Everybody should develop their own policy and the partners should support it
