All they care about is if you’re making $$ for them.
This. They don’t give a shit and if budgets are tight you are better served leaving to level up.
I’m surprised at these answers. If it takes any longer than a year, I’d leave and go to another agency. There’s ADs with anywhere from 6/7 years of experience so to move up through the levels, you can’t be at AAE level for 2-3 years as some people are saying.
I think some of these more conservative answers (including mine) are taking shrinking client budgets into account. If you can't bill to clients at a higher rate, you are effectively at the same position.
A promotion in title only isn't a real promotion, and sets you up for frustration down the line.
It takes anywhere from 1-2 years. Don’t be afraid to move around if you don’t get promoted at the junior levels.
2 to 3 years is the usual, but that obis only possible if a role opens up or if there is increased budget on your account. Being split across multiple accounts gives you perspective on different clients and a foot in the door if a spot opens up
I’d promote most of my AAE and AE workers in a year for each, maybe 1 year for SAE too, sometimes 2. At AS relatively 2 years depending on their interpersonal skills. It becomes very variable at GAS level.
I don’t think that things really change up much until AS and GAS.
VP, account supervisor is replacing Group account supervisor in omnicom health group. also the equivalent to Account director at IPG
A good rule of thumb is to just start doing the next job. Get the AE job description and start owning responsibilities at that level. Nail it, then start moving on to the next one. Gather examples along the way that you can point back to with your manager.
Naturally, you’ll have learning curves which will determine the timing of the next bump. But, if you focus only on the timeline, you’ll spend more time waiting than progressing.
Promotions go two ways: you advocate for yourself and your manager advocates for you. Don’t forget to do your part.
well said 💯
There’s usually a number of variables at play here, but long story short you need to have open conversations with your manager about your agency’s internal processes for promotions. It typically includes the following: your individual growth/development, your accounts’ needs/budget, your agency’s needs/budget, individual performance, etc. I’ve been an AAE for 1.5 yrs and am getting ready for a promotion myself. Honestly, it’s all a spectrum, including circumstance, your drive/growth, and a little bit of luck.
My account is super technical and I know I could run laps around some SAEs on other accounts. The easiest/fastest way to get promoted is to self promote by agency/account hopping.
for AAE/AE, 1-1.5 years depending how the promotion cycles fall. i know some people who would’ve been promoted after 1 year but since they got hired over summer, had to wait until the following november (promotion cycle at that agency).
2 years for AAE and AE is a lot, ideally 1 year for each, but as mentioned above it can vary slightly depending on the agency. SAE to AS could be 1-2 years depending how you perform
