Relationships are key to all success. Build that student relationship. Once you have their individual trust, you’ll have their collective trust. When the students know you’re someone who will have their back, they’ll try as hard as they can for you. I’m not saying their behavior will be perfect but when you ask them to follow their behavior plan, or go for a walk, when they refuse to move for their gen ed teacher, they begrudgingly get up for you and take that walk’. They’ll comply for ‘you’.
The other thing, and you probably already know this, do not personalize anything an emotionally or behaviorally impaired student says to you in the heat of a trauma response or when in a dysregulated state. No emotion can be shown from your side.
One thing I did was I always har snacks or fruit in my room (a couple apples). You’d be surprised how many kids don’t get a stable meal at home and are hungry but hide it. If they see the snacks or fruit, kids will ask if the can have it. Good luck!
You’re welcome! I miss the kids at school 😞
Document, document, document! Take notes, take photos, videos etc( Ie of kids hands , pointing to items obviously not faces). Audio record them performing skills. Keep a detailed log if all communication, record possible difficult meetings/ phone calls. Just back yourself with proof of what you say and claim is true. You can’t go wrong if you do this. There’s no such thing as too much documentation.
That is actually super smart! Seems super necessary in today's world. I will definitely be doing more documentation, thank you!
