Other than calls with the court and certain clients I look semi homeless at times.

I wouldn’t wear a t shirt as a first year. When you’re a partner or senior and have an established reputation, fine, but I would definitely try to look business casual as a junior associate.

like

I’d find it pretty odd personally if someone came on an internal zoom call looking like they would in the office. I usually see what people would typically wear on weekends (jeans, sweatshirts). Nicer than gym wear but still just stuff you’d wear lounging in the house. Lots of quarantine beards still. But then again I usually have three kids surrounding me so formality went out the window long ago.

Read the room and adjust accordingly. I’d be a bit more cautious initially and dress a bit more formally if unsure.

like

Agree with the others. Have a spare shirt or blouse nearby, but feel free to work casual. Always feel free to wear sweatpants.

like

I take a cue from who i am talking with. If its all associates, it’s definitely acceptable. If it’s a partner who also joins the meeting in a sweatshirt/tee shirt, it’s acceptable. However if the partners are dressed in a shirt or semi-formally, I’d suggest mimicking their style/level of formality.

I always wear a shirt and now a blazer since its cold when we have a client zoom call, no matter what the partners or clients wear.

like

The sweater close to my desk is a lifesaver. It's just a step up from t shirts and makes you seem like you're not lounging around in gym clothes all day. 😂

like

I keep a sweater blazer on the back of my chair and throw it on over whatever I have. Dresses up even a tshirt.

Working at a boutique transactiona firm. First year did not receive much guidance and made a few errors, one of which could have been a deal but ended up being fine but overall I worked hard, billed hours above target and showed a willingness to learn. Three main partners in the group. I feel like I may have been written off by the one partner, still get a fair amount of work from another and the third has never really given work but has a rep for doing things alone or using seniors. Generally curious how many companies offer phone reimbursement? My last gig did not but the current one does. Legally it seems, all employers are required to do so if we use our phone in literally any capacity (video call, slack, teams, emails etc). How prevalent is the issue of not reimbursing phone dues?

I’m in a little of a pickle but a good one. Offer A. Established “start up” doing well financially and projected to hit profitability. 130k base. Stocks offered, unlimited PTO, and 70% Medical covered. Offer B. Is at a business much larger…90k salary with 10% bonus and generous stock offering. Titles are different which is why the pay is much different. I know some may think it is a no brainer but offer A allows me to grow the department ground up whereas offer B id be apart of to just different

I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). 1st yr at a nyc v50 firm doing general transactional work. I know the lateral market for transactional lawyers is hot but not as hot for juniors. I just want a change of scenery because my current firm is bleeding good associates / not giving great training imo / and just seems small. Would lateralling this early feasible?
