Companies ask about your preferred sexual orientation to gain insight on your personal politics. They want to see if your politics align with the company's values. I don't think the question should be asked.

Sure it isn't the majority of companies but I am willing to bet it is a lot more than you think it is. I bet planned parenthood deals with this a lot too lmao. Not to mention literally any gay bar. Not to mention that for all we know OP might be proactively seeking such companies because they want to work in an inclusive company culture. I know that was the case for me, and that is how I ended up in my current role.

I don't understand it either, I have seen it on a ton of applications and it's still makes me wonder why. Like how is that related 😂
If politics and religion conversations are frowned upon in "most" company settings then sexual orientation and the ever growing "gender identity market" should be as well.
I think the other school of thought is for organisations who want to make sure they have diversity of thought on their teams. Knowing more about the background and real life of candidates can make sure that you don't have demographics that are monopolizing your organization.
Oh, I'm not saying it's best practice or that they should be asking. It is 100% none of their business. I'm just saying that this is a common intent that I've heard.
I’ve never personally seen sexual orientation asked on a resume. I didn’t even think a company could legally ask that but maybe I’m wrong.
