Poor sleep, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, imposture syndrome, & isolation
I also think that it’s the type of personalties consulting tends to attract - lots of competitive, outgoing, high-achievers, which can be difficult for more withdrawn types or anyone constantly struggling with feelings of inadequacy (myself included). I just try and remember that someone else’s success does not preclude my own success.
I think people are competent but constant negative feedback from those above you can do a lot of harm to one's self esteem.
The worst is if the firm wants you to quit because they know you’re disabled with depression, they themselves with withhold promotion, withhold opportunities for advancement, and stifle your pay until you feel low self esteem and leave. When I think of how badly people with depression suffer and I see a firm do these things it makes me sick inside with hatred and disgust.
Too many pressures to behave a certain way, to have clients perceive you a certain way. It’s just unnatural to have to be turned “On” or fake it 100% of the time. When traveling you basically have no “me” time to be yourself
@K1 I have to say that being outgoing/competitive/high achieving/extroverted doesn’t necessarily preclude you from struggling with feelings of anxiety and depression. I’m one of those people who seems to be so happy on the surface but am always miserable internally. Not to say I must be right, just that this job can ruin you no matter what your personality
@PwC 1 great point, and I completely agree.
