You hit the nail in the head absolutely, you brain directs attention to wherever the highest likelihood of a dopamine release, whether that be ‘productive’ as in a task list, or a diversion into something intellectually interesting. It’s exhausting. Especially on days when you need to just get a few critically important things done. It’s comforting to know that you and others have the same challenges, and ADHD does not describe the condition accurately as you have said.
Wait, isn’t this just being human?
No one likes Mundane stuff and it’s hard to stay focused on boring things?
Well, yeah. That’s the struggle with a lot of these types of neuro-psych and mental health “disorders”. Fighting the stigma that it’s not really a disorder cuz everyone has some of that. Yes, A typical person experiences many of these feelings or symptoms at some level….has difficulty but generally overcomes that feeling with ease because they know they have to. An ND/adhd, feels almost paralyzed to overcome it. An ND is so impacted that it adversely impacts their success in life. It IS a bit difficult to understand these spectrum phenomena and I even still doubt myself sometimes. (Eg is it just a lack of discipline, laziness, etc?). But when you start to recognize it as differences in the brain’s executive function methodology, as more study is starting to prove, it becomes clearer that it’s not a matter of “will” or responsibility or commitment. The brain works different and it’s not a choice to function that way. All to perfectly prove OPs point. It’s fairly well discussed that adhd is a misleading moniker derived from decades of misunderstanding of the neurological mechanisms of these shared traits adhd diagnosed people have.
OP. Yes, I believe it’s more about unique attention shifting/focusing/filtering than deficit, for sure. I’m rarely just “spacing out”. I’m quickly and frequently moving to another topic I perceive as important, and another, and another…at the expense of the last one unfortunately.
