Just be upfront with them but a lot of times our job descriptions states other tasks as assigned. So there's nothing we can do. My husband took on another department and was not given a raise. Nothing he could do even though he expressed his frustration. He said hopefully one day it will help him in advancement or when he looks for another job.
I understand the company's need to adjust our roles and duties, but it feels unfair to increase my workload without an increase in compensation. I recently took on additional responsibilities at work and was rewarded with a raise, so I am hoping that this situation could be resolved in a similar manner. I would like to discuss with my manager what can be done to make this change more equitable.
It's pretty common for them to try to make you do multiple jobs with no extra pay. Unless you absolutely need to stay there I personally would find something else. Most likely this won't be the first time this will happen, at least from my experience. I got hired for one thing, then learned an additional job, then learned and additional job. Next thing I knew I was doing the work of several departments for 14 bucks an hour. I quit.
Worth finding out first what the new thing is. Who knows, could be better than what you do now, or could be similar effort but as its different it may actually be more interesting at least for a while. I got cross trained with another department last year, again no extra money. Both departments have same salary structure, but since I now do roughly 50% of my time in each it seems to make the day's go quicker.
They could be getting you ready for a new job but they aren’t sure what yet. Talk with your manager about it.
Do you work where I work? When I started 11 years ago it was just two skills, and now it's 13 skills, plus reception duties too. And they're getting more skills lined up for us. Yay.
’d like to know what this actually looks like in practice? Are you stressed about remembering so much? Is it fully two sets of processes or systems? What’s the impact on your day to day?
