The good news is that I should only have low interest mortgage debt by the end of this year.
Having a spouse with relatively good income helps. We are able to save 54% of our take home pay. But we also don’t have kids and relatively cheap rent compared to housing costs.
Take a look at your bills, is there anywhere that is a want , that you don’t necessarily need and can live without?
After all expenses I have about $250 I put towards savings but it varies since I leave me a couple hundred dollars of spending money. Geez .03! Are you just not making enough or do you have a high maintenance life style?
Typically with my spouse working we are to save $7K which is one of our incomes. He recently got laid off so now probably $1K
This is why I do direct deposit to savings and my Roth IRA before I even get my paycheck.
I max out my Roth IRA and HSA, put 15% of my gross income into my Traditional 401(k), and I put $500 per paycheck (biweekly) in my savings.
Between my IRA, 401(k), savings, and HSA, I save a little over 35% of my gross income, then I have the rest after taxes and FICA are taken out to pay bills and enjoy a few indulgences.
