ok real talk can someone explain to me why people say the engagement loses money if I spend too much time on it and go over budget? because it's not like i'm seeing the money for the extra hours... does it have to with opportunity cost where I could be scheduled elsewhere because it's not like I don't have to still do whats assigned on my schedule, so what gives? why does it matter if I want to spend more time on a project. assume im crazy and want to work more so forget all the burn out and mental sanity answers.. thats my business. I genuinely don't understand this and its not like im bad at numbers (per performance reviews) and this cant be that much of a hard concept even for a mediocre accountant like myself
This is why I started my boutique firm where we don’t keep track of time, etc. Our jobs are all fixed fee, upfront priced and scope well defined. We schedule our people accordingly and basically the “overtime” they aren’t paid for is their discretion essentially going above and beyond for the client. The inherent nature of accountants is to get things more - perfect so our clients are thrilled as they are always getting a little extra. Our staff is happy because they aren’t getting told they have to stop short of doing a job they are proud to deliver. We charge a premium and don’t lose any clients unless their business changes and we are no longer a good fit. We are very niched and specialized.
