McKinsey & Company McKinsey & Company I have my first rounds (2 cases) for a position at the risk practice. Will I be interviewed by consultants in the risk practice? I wonder if I can ask some risk practice specific questions at the end of the interviews. (Didn’t get the names of the interviewers yet so I cannot google)

Being European and having lived in NYC, I can assure you that 45k or 60k go far in Europe. 100k plus salaries in PR and ad world are rare (unless we are talking Group AD to MD level) and people live very comfortable lives. In Germany, $50 is easily a whole week of groceries for one person, plus universal healthcare etc. A beer in any bar in is rarely more than $4, same for wine - just to give you a comparison. What needs to be said though is that the majority of Europeans also don’t have any college tuition to pay back, so those expenses are not taken into consideration. Having lived in more than 4 countries so far, I agree however —> don’t move abroad for the money, do it because an opportunity arises and you want to do it for yourself. You shouldn’t underestimate either how difficult it can be to obtain the right work visa, so if a company is willing to make those financial investments for you, and you like them, go for it. You’ll have the time of your life.
I have no help for you on this but wanted to say congrats!!!! Amsterdam is such an incredible city with a wonderful quality of life; I hope that it is wonderful for you! 😊
Make sure to ask for the 30% tax cut if your an expat and it’s the first time working in Amsterdam. Basically they will give you back a 30% of your taxes (In Amsterdam they are really high) but his helps.
High quality life. Safety. No guns. Universal healthcare. Take a cut.
Experience and awards dictate salary
50-60k euro
Amsterdam pays better than the rest of Europe. I’ve heard of senior people making over 100k euro. Depends on the agency and your book
thanks for the replies. i know i’m gonna take a hit, just trying to figure out to what extent.
Ask what happens if it doesn’t work out in the first 12 months and negotiate that they pay your moving back to the states costs (ie they lose an account or for other unforeseen reasons cut you loose)
Socialism broh, the best pay on this world
How’d you go about finding jobs there? Did you go through in agency recruiters or headhunters?
also, how do the friendly dutch government subsidies come into place when looking at overall cost of living?
Expect a 40-60% paycut. I’m serious.
Amsterdam pays more because it costs more...
I was offered 25K euro for a junior gig at a global agency in AMS. Similarly, another global shop offered me 45K euro for a senior-level role in Germany. I want to move to Europe, but gotta wait a few years at least.
Real quick, you're not comparing units, are you? I'm sure you know it's not apples to apples. Calculate (estimate approximately) what you'd be taking home and compare to cost of living.
i will follow up once i get the number. sadly i’m making 150+ so if it’s like 60k, i just don’t know if i can make that work. thanks for all the replies, everyone!
Berlin is much more inexpensive than Amsterdam. Amsterdam is actually quite pricey.
50-60k is cd going rate
