Engineer in Oil and gas right now, working 35 hrs/wk in a rural town (low Cost of living) and great work life balance; total comp 115k @ 2 years exp

McKinsey reached out to me to interview for an analyst position in Houston. I have never considered Mgmt Consulting, but they outright told me the comp

I don’t even know if I’ll pass the interviews but if I did, I need advice. Sounds like I would be doubling my hours for same pay and higher cost of living? But faster pay growth? Avenue out of O&G?

Not to wax poetic, but what do you want out of life? Do you love the laid back small-town atmosphere, or are you itching for a change? You're comparing apples and oranges here. Both are fine choices, but will lead you down very divergent paths.

It will definitely be a grind above all else. If you want to set yourself up for success 3-5 years out and you’re mentally prepared to do it I’d say go for it.

Ex-McK here.

+60hr week, your base salary will definitely be higher and the exit opportunities are amazing.

If you’re “happy” with the current path of your life and see yourself living the small town life, enjoy your life and don’t worry about it. If you want to change your life path, 100% do it.

$115k sounds extremely low to me. I know people hired right out of school with BA in MIS from Purdue making $120k in Houston.

I know that McKinsey will look good on a resume and may be worth it in the long run. But I have also generally found that you can ask for $15k over what they offer and get it, usually. $15k is at least a car note.

Don't get me wrong. I have done it. 7 years ago I took a huge pay cut to retool my career. Make sure you have a plan and don't just assume simply working there is enough to build your career.

Accenture 2 has words of gold right here. Everything they said is 100% on the money.

That's about right

I’m looking for a new job, working remotely, that doesn’t require a Bachelor’s. (I’m currently going back to school to get one, as I only have an Associate’s in Mathematics right now)
I had positions in private sector that allowed me to supplement having a degree with experience but not in public sector. I’ve seen coworkers get positions they aren’t able to do simply because they have a degree and then leave a mess for me to clean up but I’m not allowed to have the position. Any suggestions?

I signed for a new job two months ago and will start next month (3 mo notice period in Europe). They were very keen on getting me on-board ASAP before signing but since I signed the contract it has been silent from the new employee. I've emailed them with questions as I'll be re-locating to NL and it takes them 1-2 weeks to reply. Given all that's going on in the world, I'm worried they might fire me before I even start.
