I doubt that would hold up, frankly, considering how shrunken Billings from fee-cutting clients has us juggling more clients at once. However, lemme throw out another proposal...make Monday and Friday work from home days. That way things like waiting for the cable guy or scheduling a dentist appointment for your kids become less disruptive, People weekending out of town can make an early break for it and still work, and the three days midweek would emphasize meetings and collaboration.
Had this when I started my career. Every other week was a 4 day week. So half the team had each Friday off to assure there was coverage. It was fantastic. Allowed people a day to keep their doctor's appointments and errands out of the way or even travel for the weekend. Just fabulous!
And it didnt reduce working hours, just moved them.
I just want a work from home day. I’m so much more productive from home. Done it plenty as a freelancer and makes such a difference.
Not sure this would happen in our industry because, false starts, rebriefs, meetings about meetings, etc. when would we have the actual time to get the work done? It’s nice to think about though. Would definitely be more refreshed and ready for work every Monday morning.
I think you could even ask more of employees to make it happen - and WE WOULD DO IT! If working a bit longer four “10” hour days, with the occasional Friday client call meant I always get a three day weekend - well shiiiit it would be amazing.
You actually do not need longer 4 days to compensate for cutting a day out. It's been long shown that having less / finite amount of time to do something with a clear and inflexible cutoff time improves focus and productivity. That combined with optimal / peak time utilized for hardest tasks done first (there's a point after you get tired where productivity sharply drops and longer hours make it worse / cost more / represent a loss)
I work the equivalent of a 6- or 7-day week most weeks, in 5 days. As much as I would love a shorter week, I could never get all the work done. Th agency makes too much money from my hours to let me drop an account. So trapped.
It would be difficult to implement in our industry, as we are client driven. I know of an agency that lost clients bc they gave employees the federal holidays off (Columbus, Veteran's, etc.). The clients worked those days and expected the agency to be in as well. Also, watch out for management to cut your salary by 20%
It can absolutely happen if true commitment to implementing correctly and sticking to it no matter what was there. It's just like other boundary setting. I've had several clients who had a company policy of no meetings on Fridays and we were still able to do all of calls and presentations on Mon-Thu. Fridays simply didn't exist as an option and all timelines were developed by PMs to reflect that. It took like 1 month for the policy to be adopted and adhered to. It's so much about mindset and habit building.
I would be more productive but honestly cant imagine avoiding fielding calls or putting out fires on that 5th day.
Hard when many of us already have an 8-10 day work week (8 hrs x 8 days = 64 hrs/week). Cutting to 4 actual days is a lot even if you did 10/day. That plus clients who expect work some most days. This kind of thing works better in corporations that have agencies to keep working during their fancy schedules.
Dude if you’re working 8-10 days a week, you don’t know what the fuck you are doing. That is all.
I thought everyone was already on a 4 day work week. I know I am and have been so for years. What the hell is wrong with the rest of you’s?
Definitely more productive. And if I can’t get my work done in those 4 days it’s nice to think that I can (if I needed to) on that fifth
