Bleeding gums, yellow teeth, and bad breath are the most common signs. If you've been feeding it the same food for a while, maybe try choosing a different brand.
Bad breath is the most obvious sign! Google “Periodontal Disease in Dogs” for more info, and pictures!
Stage 1: Tartar begins building up and gums begin to redden.
Stage 2: Gums continue to be swollen and bone loss begins to develop.
Stage 3: Bone loss continues to occur.
Stage 4: Severe bone loss can lead to loss of teeth and bloody gums.
You can prevent this by giving your dog dental chews, purchasing water additives from your veterinarian, or by getting dental cleanings under Anesthesia!
Persistent stinky breath is a very common complaint in veterinary medicine. You can also look out for gums that bleed easily or pus around the tooth. If your pet has also had changes in appetite, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, or diarrhea, you should call the vet sooner rather than later. These may be signs of a more serious underlying problem that needs to be addressed quickly.
