My husband (American) and I (Latin American) are living in my home country but looking to move to Miami. I have worked in Latam BigLaw for 10+ years (with 1 in US as Foreign Associate). I have an LLM. My practice is focused on Banking & Finance but have done mostly cross-border M&A (+the financing side) the last 2 years. Tired of being in big law but open to everything else. The prob is, not really sure what “everything else” is at this point. Ideas? Open for law positions but no BigLaw.

What about a position with a company that needs an immigration lawyer or a compliance/ethics attorney who is a Spanish speaker? Miami is the right place to be for someone with your experience.

like

I would focus on in-house positions at banks or private equity firms with business in Latam and/or look for in-house positions that are transactional related and require Spanish/Portuguese (not sure which from your post) skills. You will have a paycut almost for any position if you don’t want to keep doing BL - there are a tons of surveys out there broke down by market so you can find how big of a paycut to expect.

like

Also, hoping for not a huge pay cut. TIA!

Maybe in-house at tech company needing latam advice?

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless
