3x dad here who has taken multiple full 16 week leaves.
You will never get the time back. Take the leave.
Will there be consequences? YMMV based on who you’re working for. It’s a weird time to be a dad in a job like this. Expectations have never been higher for fathers at home. Most existing partners never had access to the leave policies that have been rolled out over the past 10 years and had their kids in a time when we were in the office 5 days a week frequently until 8p or later. Life for parents was very different 10 years ago and not for the better. Many partners celebrate the improvements, some don’t respect dads taking anything longer than a cursory leave.
Unless you become a stay at home dad you’ll never have that time again with your kids. I’ve hear do directors pushing to get dads back but the firms offer long leave to entice people to sign.
I’m sure you’ll get some comments to sue for discrimination if you get passed over for promotion but that seems messy and unlikely (not legal advice 😎). I would just take it.
And to be fair, most firms offer 12 weeks so it’s not like you have a crazy good benefit. I think people can get along without you for a couple months.
Take it all. For comparison, EY offers 16 weeks. I know Senior Directors that have taken all 16 weeks with no questions asked.
I've listened to our partners telling new dads to take 16+3 because it still doesn't need extra approvals/require a formal leave of absence.
