That article is clearly out of touch with actually cost of living. It’s not remotely accurate. Only way you can live in Vancouver with that salary comfortably is by living with family and not having to pay for housing.
And even if you don’t pay for housing, there’s still:
Electricity
Gas
Water
Internet
Cellphone bill
Home insurance
Auto insurance
Auto payments
Darn taxes
HST on EVERYTHING
Almost feels like a scam at this point. Or a big ass ponzi scheme.
lol you’d spend that much on rent alone
Live? What does “live” mean? Barely survive on junk food, probably. Prosper as a first world citizen? ROTLMFAO HELLS NO
The article is all over the place… According to this there is a $177 difference between Ottawa and Vancouver in cost of living. Yet they are including surrounding areas in Vancouver but not in Ottawa? That would mean comparing a total population of the 800k in Ottawa within the city to millions in and around Vancouver. After tax of $79.5k in Vancouver is liveable - how many people over 65 in Vancouver make more than that on a pension? Very few.
Like…. Just rent, right? 🙄
Can? Yes. Should, no
I'm moving to Vancouver from London. It's not that much different here in the UK where people are paying $2000 for a room in a flatshare. And I heard that it's the same in Toronto. It's just a worldwide crisis..
The difference is the disparity between cost of living and wages here relative to Toronto and UK. I’ve lived in all 3 and currently live in Vancouver.
Took a substantial pay cut initially but cost of living remained high.
I live in Vancouver now. It’s possible if:
- you can find cheap rent, there is $1800-2200 rent for a 1 bedroom floating around in the GVA
- rent a room for much cheaper
- don’t drive or limit driving, it’s doable depending where you live
- don’t plan to save as much
- dig out for deals with groceries, some good options for local places for fruit and veg
- limit going out to eat, I do 2x a week
That number is accurate. If it’s the post tax amount.
Well said.
