Ask vanguard to roll it over to an IRA
There are still tax implications if you want to do a backdoor Roth IRA. If OP never wants to do a backdoor Roth, then there are no tax implications to moving a 401k to a tradition IRA.
However, if OP does want to do a backdoor, then they’d have to move the roll IRA to their new 401k if it allows or pay the pro rata tax.
The pro-rata rule. The IRS requires rollovers from traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs to be done pro rata. Here’s how it works: When determining your tax bill on a conversion from a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA, the IRS is going to look at all of your traditional IRA accounts combined.
Depends. Compare fees, investment options, and investment performance.
It's easier to manage all in one account, but don't do it if your ROI is better in the old plan.
There’s potential tax implications for doing this^
If you transfer to a rollover IRA and you want to do a backdoor Roth, then there would be tax implications.
It’s just about fees. Does your new account have lower fees that you’d like to take advantage of. Could also roll it to an IRA if fees are lower. If Roth, benefit is that you don’t have to pay RMDs, which lets the money grow tax free longer if you don’t need the funds immediately.
Keep your Vanguard account for the long haul. When you get a new job transfer your current 401k to the Vanguard and so on.
Are you allowed to keep your 401(k) at your old employer if that old employer is an audit client of your new employer?
That's a good question, but if the plan is managed by a third party, I would hope that provides sufficient independence. Does your new firm do the EBP audit, or just the financial audit?
