Don’t. Just don’t.
Choose a different big 4
The big four is the big four. But I have no regrets moving to EY, it varies depending on the group like any other public accounting firms, based on my experience, the people I work with here at EY appear to be more normal and less mean. To me, that's enough and that says a lot about my previous experience with other public accounting firms. I have horror stories personally with one of the other three.
I joined EY in a tax consulting National group and have loved it! Key for me was finding the ppl I enjoyed working with and doing all I could to get work with them.
I just started, so take this with a grain of salt, but I’m liking it so far. I have some commitments next year that will pull me away from the office. My exp mgr was excited for me and put all 8 weeks in as vacation.
Which SSL? I’d say in general PwC and EY are the best of the big 4s in tax based on competency of the people and revenue from tax. I do agree with other that the tone at the top is really poor but the leadership in your local offices practice is going to impact more than whatever the CEO says on these all hands webcast. I came from EY and when I gave my notice, my partner told me he didn’t like how Kelly Grier handled things for the last year. Also the tax technology is atrocious compared to PwC so you are going to have a hard time if you rely a lot of tech m.
Coach
You’re right about it varying by service line and office. Probably should provide what you’re considering so people can provide you better insight. Depending on a person’s rank, you might get responses ranging from tolerable to hell on earth.
Honestly, since I was only there for a year, I can’t really say I felt like that was the problem. I actually got a lot of exposure and was respected by the PPEDs I worked with. It was my peer group that was the bigger problem. My peer coach wasn’t very approachable and all of the EY lifers in my group basically had a “can’t sit here” mentality. I also saw a lot of associates/seniors struggling and no one seemed to want to mentor them and then they’d be sort of nasty about their “coaching” approach. It gave me constant low level anxiety. My local office tax group wasn’t like that though, it was really just in the national group I was in that I felt that.
Depends on the office and team. I personally liked Deloitte more in terms of the culture and people. EY is more flexible and I like my benefits here.
