What are tax implications of backdoor Roth? My understanding: I contribute $7k of after tax dollars to a traditional IRA, then convert that 7k to my Roth IRA. What do I owe taxes on? Online says I owe taxes on the 7k but isn’t that double taxation bc it’s already after tax dollars? Thanks!

If you let it sit in a money market fund for a bit before converting and it earned $5 of interest that $5 is the taxable portion on conversion.

There's a form that you fill to make sure you don't get double taxed. 8606 if I'm not mistaken

If you fill out your forms correctly you will not owe any taxes. In turbo tax - you need to enter info under income and then again in deduction so it might temporarily show you owing taxes.

Here is good detailed guide on how to fill the tax form

https://thefinancebuff.com/how-to-report-backdoor-roth-in-turbotax.html

I do it each year. Don’t get double taxed. However you have to never have had a traditional IRA before. My accountant was really insistent on me double checking. Then for the brief time it’s in the traditional IRA it can’t earn even a cent before being transferred.

Additional Posts in Personal Finance Bowl

I spent the last 3 months "growing up" & now I'm ready to go. 1st thing is for me to get my own place. I'd like to buy instead of rent because I don't want to pay someone else's mortgage.

I'm thinking of selling my car & cash out some of my 401k to buy a house. My thought is to put down 3.5% for a FHA loan then make a big payment towards the principal to reduce long-term interest.

Anything wrong with this thinking or anything else I should consider?

Currently maxed Roth 401k, Roth IRA, HSA, and ESPP at 23 YO, should I consider an after-tax conversion? I’ve read about back-door Roths but I’m still far below the income limit as an analyst. Definitely looking into early-ish retirement, should I just invest the rest in a regular brokerage account until I reach the income limit? Am I even allowed to do a conversion? Any advice is helpful :)
