Agree with this. Have deleted instagram and TikTok for nearly 2 years now. Best decision for exactly what’s mentioned in the ss as well as mental health, impulse purachses, time saving, eye straining, back/neck posture… the list could go on and on.
Also being late teens and early 20s it could be seen as harder to stay in touch with friends and family if they are using social media for main forms of comms but we do have WhatsApp and iMessage 😀.
A few years ago, I deleted Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, the whole 9 yards. I think Instagram especially if you’re in a relationship won’t do you much good. As a man, a lot of my “for you” content was mostly just models and girls with the exception of cars and sports. This made my girlfriend feel very insecure understandably so, also having the opposite sex on your Instagram and liking their posts even as a friend after a certain age is pretty grimy, especially if you’re seeing someone. People can rationalize it whatever way they’d like but for those who have been in relationships know that there’s pretty much no excuse for doing that kind of stuff.
Also, my perception of women completely changed after a month or two of not seeing artificially done up women for a long time. I really wouldn’t look at normal women as attractive because of all the crap you see on social media but once you don’t have it, you do start to see the beauty in everyone
Completely agree - my take is that these social media apps are totally evil - both from a worldly perspective as well as religious. They create feelings of angst, jealousy and frustration; there is unwitting exposure to things that can drive certain irresponsible and/or non-allowed behaviors. Religiously, they are no less than an addiction, they suck up time that could be used for being a better person by being present for yourself or others or for other contemplative pursuits.
I started deleting all social media in 2018. It was one of the best decisions I made for myself! Snapchat was the first to go, then Twitter, then Instagram, then tik tok. All gone by 2021!
I deleted social media and have been much happier ever since. Can you have a healthy relationship with apps? Yes, but they are designed to suck you in. Have I used my new found time for prayers, honestly no, but I’ve been able to be more present which is nice.
I would like to provide another perspective.
Social media runs a narrative in today's world. If we weren't on social media, the zios would keep hold of the narrative. It's important for Muslims to have an online presence to ensure we are represented and have a voice.
Now, the issue of Muslim males having access to social and not being able to control themselves is another matter. That is a personal matter. If it isn't social media, they'll find another route.
