What’s the appropriate career path one must take to work in this field? I looked up product marketing jobs online but the titles are either marketing assistant or product marketing manager. Do you have to start as an assistant and work your way up?

Yeah, you usually have to work your way up. You got it, though!

I feel it's mundane to work up the ranks from an assistant. I did the same, but I don't believe it has to be that way.

Hey so the typical path is Associate, PMM, Sr. PMM, Director, VP. You can often make PMM after about 3 years as an associate. If you're coming in from another angle like customer success you can sometimes make a lateral move to PMM but you might want to start searching with the term associate. I don't suggest assistant unless you learn you could have associate level responsibilities quite quickly, especially since you're already manager level.

Got it. I thought there are positions like product marketing coordinator, product marketing assistant, etc, but it seems like this is more of a managerial area. Thanks for explaining!

It depends on the company in my experience. If you can show and demonstrate why you deserve a higher position to start off with, they usually give it to you. Good luck on it!

I began in marketing as a marketing assistant (part-time during college), was promoted to a marketing associate after graduating, then moved to marketing coordinator/specialist roles, and finally just started working as a product marketing manager.

I think titles mean a lot less than they used to. For instance, I was the only marketing professional at my 2nd to last company and even though my title was "marketing coordinator" I was really running the whole ship, in more of a marketing manager capacity. As long as you are learning and getting the experience you need to in order to become a kickass product marketing manager, you should be fine.

It all comes down to marketing yourself as a product marketing manager and crushing the interview process. It becomes evident in the interviewing process whether you know what you're doing and are prepared to take on the role with many companies including some sort of formal presentation/project as part of the process. Even though it sucks doing the work without getting paid, it demonstrates your skills and knowledge and is worth it in the long run if it gets you into the position you want!

Best of luck to you :)

Thanks for explaining!

Made a career pivot to another agency. During the interview we talked about how it may start as initially a "step backwards" (pay/benefits) but has potential for more long term growth. First day was yesterday. Had no communication about when or where to show up, sat in an empty office for about half an hour before a couple people finally showed. No phone call or email. Sent an email to the founder, no response. I could easily get my old job back if wanted.

I have a friend who was let go a few months into his first job after college (reason: the manager felt like he wasn't grasping the training content to the level that was expected). He's worried about if he should put the experience on his resume anyway, if he does will recruiters ask why he had such a short time at this place, and what will recruiters think if he explains he was let go. What are some things recruiters expect from candidates in this situation to continue considering them?

I'm two thirds through the PMA Core Certification, and the info is great but the tests are a joke. They need to contract with an educator that specializes in testing and assessment to come in and develop exams that actually measure if you know the material. The bad test design devalues the certification. Not to zero, but I definitely will not be proud to have earned it. It just means I had $1300 and sat through 15 hours of video lectures.
