I had a 4th year pharmacy student do this! I coached her about it, and then spoke to her college. There was no way I could let her pass her rotation and unleash her on the world. I always had a strong philosophy on learning and educating at my pharmacy, students were never allowed to say "I'm just a student" but my techs and students were encouraged to introduce their role, say that's a great question and tell the patient they needed to look up the answer. The greatest lesson learned is what resources you have and when and how to use them... You do not know everything.
Let her know she assumes responsibility and that can end badly when she makes thinga up. She is here on out required to let a pharmacist know when she’s needing to find an answer for something she is not familiar with FACTUALLY.
Wow. If she continues to act like that; Get rid of her
Tech needs to be held to the law. If she is making stuff up she is lying no matter how you view it and can easily be putting patients at risk by falsely answering questions. If she won’t learn to say ‘let me get the pharmacist for you’ or I don’t know, she should be doing something else, maybe not direct patient contact. Patient safety & care should be at the absolute forefront of all pharmacy actions or you lose credibility.
