Why are so many people leaving Area 23? Interviewing a lot of candidates from there.

I left there after a six year stint. I still maintain it's a good shop, I just wanted to do something different and got a really good opportunity. It's changed a lot in the past couple of years - some for the better, some for the worse. The obsessive focus on awards is annoying, but the quality of the work has gone up. I'd still recommend it even if I personally don't want to work there anymore.

They fail miserably at retaining talent, while competitors know how to do this and are taking advantage of their mistake and cashing in. This happens when leadership is out of touch with their employees and just focused on one goal. Area 23 is not an unique place neither offers anything different from their competitors.

Area 23 is a good place, it’s just very hard to grow there! Perhaps because the focus is on awards so much and less on employee retention and growth

This might be industry specific, but it feels like the only way to really learn anything is by making many mistakes first! The on-boarding process isn’t great—it’s very general. Once you get on a brand there might be a bunch of brand specific things you have to learn. There is a general lack of consistency AND there’s no real clear role definitions and responsibilities on the IP side at least. The goal setting is a joke—who has time to track and ensure goals and growth are being met?!?! it seems like in theory it’s good but not in practice.

Low opportunities for growth, promotions, or interesting work unless you’re one of the chosen few. Still a good agency in a lot of ways

OP to answer your question, the reason people are leaving is because they are overworked. The agency won about 30 million this year organically; and the work isn’t staffed so everyone is covering the work while we try to fill 90 open positions. I think us on the account team are hardest hit with over 40 spots. But this is a short term problem. Every Monday when 5 new people start it gets a little better. And agency very supportive during this time. They have pulled out of pitching completely and there’s a ton of freelancers

Not true at all. I am tied to any new biz efforts. Only one pitch this year and it was the kind that it would have been awkward and insulting to pull out of. All the growth is organic and new accounts from existing clients If clients call us and want to give us business on the other hand, we’ll take it. We’re not stupid.

Some people are too comfortable in their light workload and take advantage of unlimited time offs and when real work hits, complain about being over worked! There are so many resources available and you rarely see anyone work crazy late hours unless you are in launch mode or going through concepting process! At any other agency you will not see juniors GTFO at 5:30 sharp every day!

I pinched from there because a FT writer was billing next to zero hours. So f**k the new guy, right?
