Depends on the company. Some companies value IA so they are treated well, get really good experience and grow quickly through the ranks (even in the business units) in the organization. Most don't care about IA though so you're just another expense they don't want but have to have
The reason I hear is because it doesn't make you marketable if you want to leave internal audit... but it you like internal audit, then that's not a problem. If you don't, you should gtfo within 2 years.
Internal Audit can be dead end if the shop doesn't have a rotational program or relationships to send IA out into the business. Plus you could just get stuck doing SOX for the rest of your career. So pick the IA shop, not the function broadly. Go for a bigger team, but not huge, particularly one that does advisory projects outside of their compliance stuff. If it is part of a rotational program, even better.
