Former Sr transactional paralegal, now in-house in tech:
Being proactive, a self-starter.
Figuring it out, whatever it is
Working independently (until an atty reviews your work)
Having subject matter expertise (whatever that means for the position--corporate, securities, lit, TM, whatever)
Having what amounts to legal operations experience: business sense, organization, legal tool/software expertise
Banger proofreading skills
All of the above make for a dream paralegal.
An attorney in a different bowl responded to another post I made saying that in-house roles, for litigation paralegals specifically, are not incredibly in demand and that those with in-house experience will always be preferred for jobs. I didn't know how open minded that thought really is and how realistic, so I wanted to gauge which skills are definitely transferrable. With as much experience as I have, your dream paralegal is effectively ME! :3
Having behind-the-scenes knowledge of what goes on at a firm and knowing how to manage firm counsel. As a law firm paralegal, you know the truth of what’s being done for the client and more importantly, how long it should take. When I applied for my in-house position, I leverage that knowledge and I use it when I have to manage outside counsel. Also trying to think three steps ahead is a great skill.
