Anyone coming from military or pro, college athletics feel insulted whenever a term like "teamwork" "teammate" "team first" is used in consulting? It always seems fake to me, despite well intentions

The dictionary thinks that a team is two or more people working together.

Maybe you would be more comfortable referring to your team as a collective of autonomous individuals aligned in executing the work items outlined in the statement of work. CAIAEAWIOSW for short.

It's a mouthful but then you won't insult the sports gods.

I'm going to start using the word platoon to describe my team. "Client, we have 6 grunts (analysts) ready and set to deliver a MOAD (mother of all decks) by 1900. If anything comes up we have some artillery (off shore) to take the flak off our backs. Over and out." - managing general

likefunny

It’s “over” or “out,” never both. Managing Generals are useless!

Any other married people who feel insulted whenever a term like “partner” is used in consulting? It always seems fake to me, despite well intentions

likefunnyhelpful

No but slightly offended you’re comparing military personnel to athletes 😂

That's awesome! I met one other in commerical cyber at KPMG and then he left. So I'm just chilling motivating and driving my teams.

OP - Screw the cube jockeys* bruh, I know exactly what you are saying. I played D3 slow pitch teeball and I’d die for my teammates (not like really die like military but like I’d give up a bud light for one of them).

OP- yeah sorta get where you’re coming from but can’t say “team” is a trigger... coming from college football where every game was an “all out” mentality, there is a sort of fakeness to the urgency of business situations. Like my “all out” changed from making sure I didn’t get violently crushed in front of 100k people, to making sure my footnotes are in the right order. I mean come on. Can’t imagine from a military context, we used to do training sessions with Navy Seals and those guys were maniacs haha all out/ team to them means a different thing entirely.

Agree here. OP is getting mauled for this, but I had the same background and thoughts when I first started as a 21 YO. Grew out of it by 22.

Some things you just keep to yourself because no one else cares...

How to ask for a raise when you have more responsibility ?
Is it normal for people to ask for a raise when more responsibility/task fall under them? My company is going through separation and unfortunately my team is the one getting separated, I have to take on responsibility of another 3 people and continue to deliver the same after separation… how will you start this conversation with your manager ? Thanks in advance.

Boss: I need you to stop challenging me on every decision.

Me: I don’t want us to have a confrontational relationship and I think we can agree something needs to change. When you make stupid decisions, that affects my business and it makes me feel like you’re not up to the job. That makes it harder for my team to do our jobs. I think to be an authentic leader I need to be radically candid with you and point our your mistakes. So are you willing to work with me on this?

What is the advice on what feedback to leave for a peer who really sucks at everything y'all have worked together on? It's about the time where everyone on my team requests feedback from each other and I'm nervous for it coming up. My manager knows that everything I've worked w her on I end up doing 90% of the work when it's meant to be split so it is a known issue. We're both at level 3 so are genuinely peers. She seems like a nice person but i have 0 positive work feedback tbh

I’ve worked 14+ days every day in November except yesterday when I only logged 6 hours of work (billable plus non-billable) (were required to upload our time every night now). I started working for a new law firm, much larger than the firm I was working for previously. The main attorney that I work under had noticed some mistakes I was making (I am a NY paralegal who took this position with the understanding that they’d be teaching me NJ and NYC real estate). Anyways, the attorney decided to tell the HR manager about the mistakes I had been making. Rather than HR discussing with me, the manager told my dramatic coworker to tell me..how should I handle this? Very hurt!
