Anyone coming from military or pro, college athletics feel insulted whenever a term like "teamwork" "teammate" "team first" is used in consulting? It always seems fake to me, despite well intentions

The dictionary thinks that a team is two or more people working together.

Maybe you would be more comfortable referring to your team as a collective of autonomous individuals aligned in executing the work items outlined in the statement of work. CAIAEAWIOSW for short.

It's a mouthful but then you won't insult the sports gods.

I'm going to start using the word platoon to describe my team. "Client, we have 6 grunts (analysts) ready and set to deliver a MOAD (mother of all decks) by 1900. If anything comes up we have some artillery (off shore) to take the flak off our backs. Over and out." - managing general

It’s “over” or “out,” never both. Managing Generals are useless!

I just get offended when clients wonder how I got into consulting from the Army because they thought that “people just join the Army because they couldn’t get into college.” Versions of this have been said to me several times now

like

Clients? Hell, that's what I get around the Big4. Lol

Military here, and no, it's not fake or insulting. Teams in the military can be just as dysfunctional as in the civilian world; sometimes even in new and interesting ways.

I think that this whole ‘teamwork’ aspect of college sports is blown out of proportion , let’s just be honest, folks get a free ride and a tiny minuscule percentage goes on to play pro..each person to themselves:)

I honestly think it depends on your team... If there is any actual good team work.

Ah these guyz..

Nope

No

Well done OP, well done

Take one for the "team" and they walk over your corpse as a doormat

This was a flex...

Lol get over yourself

Do projects get done on the effort of one person or do they require the coordinated effort of multiple people with different levels expertise and experience pulling together to achieve the outcome; how is that not a team?

Depends on the project, and the team. 😉

I think the distinction though is that in the military, especially active duty, you are living pretty much 24x7 with your team, and your lives are literally depending on each other. That is a vastly different level of trust and bonding compared to consulting.

The life and death thing doesn’t generally apply to sports, but winning or losing often does, and for team oriented sports, everything you do has to be well orchestrated and executed simultaneously together.

Consulting has a lot more individual contributor work that simply doesn’t exist in those other contexts. You might be assembling and reviewing and otherwise “pulling together” as a team, but there is a lot more independent work.

I was called into HR because a coworker overheard a conversation between me and another colleague taking about cable/streaming shows that we watched or recorded. I mentioned that I recorded a few true-crime shows. My colleague jokingly said, "I hope I'm not on your hit-list!". I replied, "Not anymore." HR pulled me in to say a coworker complained about me talking about hit-lists, and they were now scared. HR wouldn't say who complained, so do I have a right to ask about the resolution to this?

My partner is unstable, refuses to take their meds. Regularly snaps and lashes out at me. Im leaving and I feel compelled to tell HR for my replacement’s sake. Am I out of line?

I work with quite a few oldheads in my department, I’d like to know how to convince the higher-ups that we need to evolve our strategies to bring us in line with best current practices. I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

There’s no reason you have to put up with a job you hate. I spent many years working in a toxic environment with a boss who gossiped and lead through fear. He wasn’t really much of a leader but basically a foreman. And he could make my existence miserable. I admit that it wasn’t easy to find another job but the bottom line is: trust your guts. My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

A 3 year old startup has incurred expenses worth $2.5M till date and a revenue of $1M. They are currently at a negative $1.4M EBITDA and have come up with a valuation of $3M. Is this seem reasonable? How can I get a better understanding of their valuation?

My friend and I (both Asian and gay) were seating at the cafe on the 2nd floor of Saks Fifth Ave today waiting for our table for the restaurant on the 9th floor. A lady came and asked where are we from, and “why are you two men in this mall? This is for female only”. I said this mall sells products for all genders. She said she has walked all floors and never saw a thing for men. Then she threw curse at me. I stood up and asked her to repeat what she said. She pulled her phone and called 911

3 Things to keep in mind which changing jobs:
1. Always ask dedicated budget for the job before you tell your expectations.

2. Always have atleast 2 weeks of gap before you join any company. You might not understand significance of that but just have a gap.

3. Always talk to people of team you will be joining before you accept offer or atleast before you join company.
