At a small firm, the owner/principals should drive new business. You are what clients are buying. look for help delivering the work and drive the business your self.
Could you not just take on freelancers?
Reps are common in the production industry which allows for a small retainer vs on staff salary. Less abundant in the agency world but I wonder if we will see it more since lines are blurring and everyone is internalizing everything. Might be an arrangement like that.
My first thought would be to figure out what exactly are you outsourcing.
Is it lead gen?
Nurturing?
Pitching?
Also you need to think how this person will be presented? Are they the face? Are you still the face and they're operating in the shadows?
It's really no different than outsourcing functions like bookkeeping or payroll....stuff we all do already.
2nd and last thought is to make sure you get someone that knows the agency business. That is invaluable.
