Accenture isn’t really a consultancy to begin with. Make sure there’s a willingness to “unlearn” poor behaviors / bad work routines and leave your ego at the door.
I mean, P1 ain’t wrong. At least in the past 3-4 years ACN has majorly turned into a body shop. But demands the margins of a top tier consulting firm. Make it make sense.
From what I’ve seen, people usually don’t fail at new firms because of capability gaps, it’s culture shock. They underestimate how much the unwritten rules differ, and they don’t take the time to decode the system they’ve just joined. That’s not just a McKinsey thing…it happens anytime someone jumps firms or industries.
If I were using AI to prep for a move like this, I’d load an LLM with my full work history, where I thrived, where I struggled, and have it simulate which firms I’m most likely to succeed in. Then I’d run counter-scenarios: how I might get counseled out in the first 1–2 years, and reverse-engineer what to do differently to avoid that outcome. That’s just a starting layer, but it would force a deeper, more honest self-assessment.
And for what it’s worth… The worst time to ask someone for advice is right after they make a move. Why? Cognitive bias. Recency bias and justification bias kick in. They’re still “selling themselves” on the choice. The feedback sounds polished, but it’s not pressure-tested yet.
If you want valuable insight, talk to the people who’ve been at the new firm for 5–7+ years. They’ve seen enough to tell you what actually matters, what people struggle with, and what the unwritten rules really are.
Great advice! I’ve been using Notebook LM to prepare for interviews and it’s been super helpful.
From someone that did ACN to BCG, here’s my perspective:
1) It’s a whole different working style. You do strict check-ins and check-outs to relay progress and next steps. It’s very micro managey but also keeps you honest.
2) The expectation on quality and speed is very high. Almost unrealistic for someone that never had to do it in ACN or the big 4. Because it’s not focused on work delivery it’s pretty academic / knowledge transfer
3) You’re not judged against your MBB tenure but you are judged against you peers, it’s entirely unfair
4) I got my official first review 4 months in, not a feedback foundation/informal feedback. You should confirm how long after your start you’re getting an actual review versus a real review that impacts CTL timeline
5) If you hate it, leave it, do not stick around!
Happy to share more if you’d like, DM me
6 years. I also did a stint in PE before going to BCG
What do you have to offer?
Maybe
I see that you have an eMBA, is it okay if I DM you? I have a quick question on it.
Absolutely! Send me a message. Happy to share.
I don’t know of a single experienced hire EM from a different consulting firm who wasn’t CTL’d within 2 years. Culture, toolkit, working style, expectations are so different and pace is so fast they all ended up reverting back to what the knew
Thank you. For additional context, I have experience working industry-side for 7 years — domestic and global — before joining ACN. I’m eager to leave because I find our ways of working (and hiring and pricing and selling) so dysfunctional that I’m very keen to do things a different way.
