I work with plenty of people who don't drink and they still attend all those types of events. They order a water/soda/tea/etc. and hang out just the same as everyone else. Sounds like you're looking for an excuse
I'm Mormon and I don't drink, but i still go to the events and just get a Coke or a water. They said, if someone chose not to attend at all for religious reasons, I wouldn't consider that a bad thing. I would respect it actually, and would consider it a nice showing of dedication.
Ummmm... there was very little ridicule for his faith. Mostly firm disagreement of his belief that others should also conform to his beliefs, which by the way, are not even supported by his faith. I'm sure he views it as persecution though, and only strengthens his "dedication".
Ummm, you're pretty silly with that argument. You wanting half work for full pay clearly exemplifies your expectation that the firm pay it. Thank you for proving my point. 👍
I didn't even finish reading the responses because it's sad to see managers and senior managers basically telling us Muslims to just get over it and no firm is going to bend for the 'few Muslims'.. you guys are the reasons I would quit a job. Instead of promoting an open environment and inclusion you are saying to just let go of it and deal. Real supportive. With that being said, @OP I would say you should attend if you feel like you can be ok with that decision, and if you can't then don't. With struggle there is greater reward. Also don't think that everyone is like the jerks above.. I've had THE MOST supportive teams including partners and directors, so if anyone is not being supportive of you, try to find those who will be.
*that said
Grab a soda with lime, tell the bartender you are the DD. Then just don't tell people you don't drink. Most of the reason why people who announce they are not drinking kill the mood is because there is a guiltiness that either the drinkers feel like they should not be drinking either or because the drinkers feel like the non-drinkers are judging them. So just don't tell anyone or lie about it and everyone wins.
Lol @EY1 for sure watches Fox News.
A lot of our client events also serve alcohol. Not saying you can't be successful without attending those, but it certainly makes it more challenging to develop new business. For staff and seniors, that doesn't really matter, but it matters more the higher you go in the firm. A lot of our PPEDs/SMs choose not to drink at those events, but they still attend because they know it's important. In the end, it's your choice, OP.
Become Catholic. We love our booze.
@EY1 triggered successfully
I don't see the issue with asking to attend a separate networking event in place of attending the happy hour. Why does the concept of OP asking to attend a separate networking event bother you so much?
If OP can't attend the happy hour because of adherence to his religion that's a little bit different than you just not liking happy hours. I'm not saying the firm has to stop having happy hours, but being creative to accommodate those employees who can't attend these events makes sense.
Thou shalt not happy hour.
^How can you say the views aren't supported by his faith? Are you a devout Muslim? Do you know the tenants of the faith? I doubt it... Also, he didn't ask anyone to conform to his beliefs. He simply asked if it put him at a disadvantage and possible solutions to remedy. Where do you make this shit up? Are you the type that follows the fake news as well?
^I bet you believe all the fake news as well.
IMHO bottom line is, as much as it can suck people rate people they like higher and it can open doors. However, you have definitely be successful without that so find your own ways to network and connect and blow them out of the water with your actual performance. A coffee walk one on one can be more meaningful than 20mins of small talk at the bar.
@audit associate 1: lying is a sin
If happy hour utilization is part of our performance rating, I'm screwed.
I'm mormon and I believe it's important to respect everyone's decisions. On occasion ill attend happy hour with a soda but that's just not my style so I don't go often. I have never felt discriminated for this at work. But I think it's key to not expect everyone to cater to you and just know that 90% of public accountants drink.
It is an actual tenant of the faith to stay away from bars or social gatherings of drinking. For instance, Christianity and Judaism also speak on swine, drinking wine and getting drunk, adultry, etc. but just depends how dedicated someone is to their faith to actually follow it
I don't think so. I typically don't even bother with most 'social events'. It's never held me back. All you need to do to get ahead in life is get along with your teams, and do your work well and on time.
