DM me if you’re interested in Fish. I’m currently at Fish and like it. I do mostly mechanical. Pays market with a 1900 billable hour requirement. I wouldn’t say all we do is drafting- it’s actually not a huge part of my practice. We are also on a free market system so I tend to get all of my work from 3 key partners I like. They genuinely care about having at least some WLB and will shift work around as needed.
Not sure how it compares to the other firms on your list, but MoFo DC pays market, leads their east coast mechanical/software group, has a 1800 billable/2300 total hours requirement, and is currently hybrid (1 mandatory in-person day per week).
Good to know, thank you!
It depends what you want to do.
Fish does a ton of drafting, which can be challenging from a work life perspective until you get really efficient.
DC has a bunch of 371 heavy firms that tend to be better for work life balance. Oblon, Sughrue, Oliff, and BSKB are probably the biggest ones. I am pretty sure that none of these firms pays market though. I’ve heard positive things from people at both BSKB and Sughrue, but mixed reviews about Oblon and Oliff.
Harrity seems like an odd place. They have an overly aggressive social media presence that is off putting to me.
Agree on Harrity. It gives pretty fake "see??? We are totally happy!!!" Some of the partners I see so often I question whether they actually work or if associates do everything while they strategize their next linkedin post. Thanks for your reply - my last firm was small and similar to bksb and wlb was excellent due to the 119s/371s - thanks for pointing this out because I assumed it was more the smaller structure. Tbh I avoid drafting apps because I just think it's painful and boring, even if I can hit the budget. Cool with claim drafting but revising draft drawings in ppt makes me want to scream
Glad I am not the only one that thinks Harrity is a bit off!
Even though they are a bit odd on social media, Harrity does excellent rankings. I would look at their patent firm rankings. You can easily see who files the most US originated applications and the most foreign originated applications.
The big players for foreign work are mostly in the DC area. I would submit applications to all of them and see what happens. It can be surprisingly hard to find good associates for these firms. Just don’t expect big firm market level pay.
Harness IP is another firm that could be a good landing spot for you too.
Thank you thank you thank you so much for all of your comments. This has been so helpful and I'm adjusting my job search accordingly. Thank goodness I'm in DC
I will say Harrity seems very efficient/motivated to streamline and automate things which is great, and they definitely get a lot of best midlaw related rankings. I'll look into Harness!
