I agree with the PIE model. Understand that competency at your work is an assumed baseline starting point with PIE. You have to be good at your job.
But if you are good at your job, that is only about 10% of the effort required to progress upward in your career path. This was a hard lesson for me to learn too. I thought for a long time that doing my job well was enough. It wasn’t until I had some sense knocked into me that I started proactively building my image and network. And since I started doing that I have made huge upward progress.
I cannot emphasize this enough though - being a top performer is the essential first step for a lasting, sustainable career.
Seems accurate to me that performance would only be at 10%! It does feel like once you start to get higher up that ladder, you really do have to know the right people to get into certain better positions. A lot of those at the top or so far and few between it does make sense.
Wow this was a really good read and something I needed to read today. I can see how this would be a total game-changer. I have always thought that performance was 100% when that clearly is not the case.
