I agree with you, if we are family, we need to treat it like it. For me, what makes me feel respected at work is having the flexibility to work from home and take care of personal matters when needed. This is what I love and makes me feel valued.
As soon as they start with the family stuff you know you're about to be taken advantage of somehow. I really don't care about what's said, though, it's how things actually work that matters. As long as we're treated with respect by the managers I'm happy to do good work. And part of that would include being able to take a day off when necessary.
Sometimes it’s so hard to ask for time off, particularly if your place is always short staffed. I agree with everyone else though. If you’re “family”, that means they should care about you more and your time should be respected and days off should be granted.
