Does anyone have pointers on how to cope with a sexist boss? In the past year he has hired 2 men to senior positions while there are internal women on the team w/ more experience & qualifications - I am one of them & expressed interest in advancement only to be told that I need to maintain a jr role for at least 4 years before having a chance at MID-level. My responsibilities and career experience in my field exceed this new Senior hire & I train him. Boys' Club 🙄

Wow this is so not okay! Have you spoken with your female coworkers about their experiences? I wonder if you might find a solution by banding together.

like

I have and the 1 other woman on my team is just as shocked and disappointed as I have been with what is going on. I have even had one of the other senior men on the team reach out to me to tell me he sees what is happening and is really frustrated. I try not to complain about it because it's not their burden but I do have supportive people on my team if I need to.

like

It's honestly so frustrating figuring out how to talk about this without appearing whiney! Plus not a lot of my female coworkers want to speak up, only work harder and somehow get the promotion.

I keep plugging away at it & trying to stay positive. Some days just get to me. I already do the job description of a senior level person but told the only thing I can do differently is wait out the time (though the last person (male) in my position was promoted in 1 year rather than 4). My co-workers think that my boss doesn't want to top me out in my role too fast so he's making me stay at each level for 4 years while having the responsibilities of a senior - I guess my boss thinks that's a compliment 🤷‍♀️

likesmart

Stop plugging away. Stop working with it. Stop remaining positive. Pull your policies and procedures and move to file accordingly. You said it yourself= you are training your new senior hire. Find where it is written how long you "have to" stay in a junior role to be considered. Talk to your HR on Monday after you gathered your receipts. Change starts with YOU, not with staying positive.

I pulled the roles/responsibilities list for the first discussion I had with my boss about my advancement. He focused on the qualifications section at the bottom of the postings (generally used for people hiring in, not people currently in the role) where it shows 4 years equivalent experience for junior, 8 years for mid and 10-12 for senior. The new hire hasn't even been in the workforce long enough to accumulate that experience where I have over a decade of relatable experiences actually in my company working directly with my current team before I was hired at my current position 2 years ago. I wasn't worried about starting at junior level to prove myself 2 years ago but have since been handed the workload of more than senior level. I was actually fine with that too (long time working around the good 'ole boy club) until a new hire with far less experience was hired in over my head while I was handed even more responsibility. I was hoping to find ways to push away my frustrations but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working very well.

smart

People like that won’t change unless they are FORCED to change - legal, fines, etc. No amount of poking or prodding will fix this so you either file a complaint (EEOC) or leave. Believe it or not your HR will likely not do much unless this becomes a big deal. Gather all your facts about the new hires (hell, even pay to run a background check) to make a case. But be careful because some of these guys are vindictive and may try to hurt your employability elsewhere. Keep us posted and good luck.

like

I'm looking at other opportunities at this point. I have over a decade more experience in related roles within my company, and have been a mentor in every position I have held. The senior hire that I've been training for a year now was barely qualified to be hired in at a junior level based on his LinkedIn experience - He's a nice guy but should not have been handed a senior role. I really do like my career but would appreciate the title for the job that I'm performing every day. I've expressed that and you're right, HR won't help me since it's my managers call. I "exceed expectations" in every performance review so it's time to go quietly.

like

A. I'm sorry this is happening.

B. I'd leave, especially if you met their metrics and had a conversation about how you can get promoted etc.

Now, if you have NOT had that conversation; you need to. Do your homework, find out what they want. Some companies make it clear which boxes you need to check before you can get promoted. Others, you have to ask around.

C. Remember, it might not be gender related, personalities and company culture play a huge role.

D. And I'm a male, my boss is a male. He and I don't see eye to eye. One of his manager buddies actively targets me. I don't expect to get promoted internally. My goal is to stay professional and GTFO.

E. Good luck 🤞

F. Don't let the b@$t@rd$ get you down.

I have not been on a project for over 3 months. Since I joined, I have been put in training. The training got extended by a month and now it's close to 4 months since I joined and without a project.

What should I do? People say that I'm lucky to get paid without doing any work, but it is stressing me out. I need the experience. The uncertainty is freaking me out, with rumours of layoffs and the certification program and all.

How do I get into a project? How long do I have to wait more?

Do I take the high salary and stay in claims or go for UW in hopes it will be best in long run?

I left Audit at a midsize firm to join KPMG erp implementation consulting about 6 months ago. So far they seem to only want to staff me on projects with a heavy focus on technical accounting and audit. Spoke to a lot of others who have left and seems like being pigeonholed or staffed on projects not related to the actual core work of the practice is the common reason.
