This will do 2 things, you’ll get your experience & you’ll have the opportunity to rebuild your confidence that you can do this. I know I kept doubting myself & wondering if I could do it and what if I forgot everything, and how about all the new meds & new laws! What am I going to do? This will give you the opportunity to ease back into it and basically get a crash course on pharmacy today. When I went back, it was like riding a bike, minus all the new drugs of course. However, it can be done!
One way to get your foot in the door is through part time or temporary positions. The 10 year gap is difficult to get around but temp positions might be more willing to see past that. Good luck!
Thank you!
Yes, except I was off for 8-10yrs due to family/medical issues. The hardest part about returning to the workforce is most, if not all, rph positions require 3yrs of current phcy work experience (except for new grads, of course). However, here I am 5yrs later and I have overcome this and am now a PIC at an independent pharmacy! So, the key was getting back in the door bc you need experience to be rehired but you can’t get rehired bc you haven’t been working due to your personal reasons.
As previously mentioned, definitely start your search with temporary or per diem positions to get your foot in the door. In some states, the competition for jobs is ridiculous and rph’s are generally known for being stable employees, meaning if a pharmacist has a decent job that pays well and is not an awful place to work, they won’t leave that job until retirement or death, sadly.
If you’ve been looking for months and still can’t find a job, you can “volunteer” as an intern at a phcy for a few weeks. You’ll probably have more luck at an independent phcy bc the corporate ones will probably have so much red tape.
