Had one as a senior and one as a manager, and was promoted to manager and SM on time. As a SM now, I'd say it might be tough to get promoted to manager on time if you had 2 kids as a senior (based on my experience in our yearly round tables). Are you thinking 2 or 3 years is "normal" for senior? While we can't fault people for taking maternity leave, we do look at client hours and contributions as a factor for promotion. So, if you spend 2 years but take 2 6-month leaves during that time, it only gives you 1 year of experience as a Senior. Technical development for seniors is big in our group, so the years matter.
I don't see any reason why not so long as you keep up with your peers and are performing at a mangers level. The rest doesn't matter. The rule that I have is I don't care where you do your work, when you do your work, or what is going on in your personal life...Im not going to judge...do what is expected and you will earn all the respect in the world. And if you need help because you feel overloaded, just say so! Don't try to hide it because people will notice anyway.
The only issue is that you should take your maternity leaves into account for your experience level. So if you have two babies and take 6 months off for each, you're a year behind your peers. If you account for that, it's reasonable to expect to be promoted "on time;" otherwise it's effectively a year early.
My friend had 3 babies all within a year and a half to two apart and is now a senior manager. She moved ranks as others did in her batch, there was no holding back. Not just that my partner was full on pregnant for her partner interview and she made it. And 2 years before that she had a baby too. So I guess it all depends on leadership, office culture, projects you are on etc.
That's awesome OP that your office is open minded. Ours not so much. If people have kids they get staffed on less engagements and eventually due to low util, get coached out
That’s pretty harsh. I definitely feel like there is an opportunity for me to pick up more responsibilities/work, but the load I have now is reasonable and I am putting in the required hours. Not doing much above and beyond though!
I have seen someone transfer offices and have a baby as a second year staff and still get promoted to senior on time
wow, that sounds hard!
Not really - I have tons of flexibility right now. I image it’d be a lot harder with 2.
Agree with EY 2. My daughters are 19 months apart. I was promoted to Manager "on time". You could even argue early if you take my leaves into account. It's about your performance, but also the group culture and the experiences you've had. It's challenging, but certainly not impossible. Good luck!
Not as a senior but I had two babies as a manager and was promoted to SM on time.
Thank you all for the responses :-)
