Has anyone here faced discrimination when coming out of the closet or being outed at work? I’m bisexual and am in a straight marriage and recently my sexuality came up. I disclosed to one associate my year but didn’t outright identify as LGBTQ to the partners involved. They didn’t ask or seem hostile but it involves an opportunity where sexuality is relevant. I am generally closeted at work historically and being married to a woman with same sex relationships behind me it isn’t an issue usually.

How is it relevant? Are you going to Africa or the Middle East? Or working for the GOP?

I’m asking whether others have faced discrimination for being out as I am considering opening up about it at work. With the organization i’d be fully open and out regardless and I am with family and friends.

Yes. People are people at the end of the day and they cannot hide their feelings all that well. Mostly it’s just uncomfortable moments. But I had people not want to work with me. It is what it is, I don’t really want to work with people who can’t be professional either. I gave up trying to be closeted at work around 32. I find it easier to just be more open about it, it weeds out the people I should avoid ahead of time. I’m not sure how or why your sexuality is relevant here but if you think you cannot be impartial or it isn’t a case you should be on then I think the professional thing to do is let your superior know and remove yourself. You don’t owe anyone an explanation as to why if you don’t feel safe to disclose.

Also 😂 @ being closeted in 2023

Yeah, I've been discriminated against myself, but there's something to be said for personal courage. You know how things get better for the next generation? By coming out and showing the straights that we're no different than them. I think Justice Kennedy even said that what changed his mind on gay rights was knowing gay people.

How do you handle people’s kids showing up on video meetings? Screaming, kicking, hamming it up, (wasting time.) Everyone else is coo-ing…I’m not a kids person. Heard a technique which is to drop off the call bc you “assume the call is over” (which seems like a great way to get fired especially if it’s a way higher up’s kids - plus it feels rather passive aggressive.) Thoughts?

Do you think it is time to find another job when your PIC is a micro manager, never trained you when you got hired, expects you to know things no one ever told you about in the first place, texts and calls you in the morning with questions you don’t have an answer to (I work evening shift so I’m mostly sleep when he reaches out), assumes the worst about everything, plots against you anyway, lies all the time, they don’t even do their job, they leave their trash behind etc. gives me anxiety.

Once when I was waiting tables, I had a guy pay me cash. The change was 45 cents, which I didn't give back to him because like who wants that.
