If you’re laid off no one would care for sure but I’ve seen people do it and it not matter.
I’m not a lawyer, just have experience getting laid off with a super restrictive non-compete. Depending where you live, non-competes are unenforceable if they keep you from obtaining work without getting paid. (My attorney let me know that if they tried to stop me from going to a competitor the former employer would have to compensate me at my salary for the period they asked for)
If you were let go by your employer, your former client won’t likely have made any poaching clauses in their contract either. At my last job, someone went to our biggest client and knew where the bodies were buried on our side. It was an asset when they could be our advocate, but annoying when they called us on behind the scenes stuff.
Agree with above, if laid off no one will likely care. If you signed a restrictive non-compete at your former employer, could be dicey but doubtful anyone would enforce.
It’s fine. Everyone will be happy you got a new job.
This regularly happens with Ogilvy ➡️ IBM and used to happen with McCann ➡️ Verizon.
Yup, did it. Old agency weren’t thrilled, but I couldn’t care less.
