Whatever their response is going to be, never ever feel bad about having to put your family first before any job. There are tons of jobs out there for you, but you only have this one brother.
Sounds like you have the right direction though, def take some time off/flexibility to be there with him. Hoping the best for him and your fam.
First off, so sorry to hear about your brother. Is there a way to defer your Deloitte offer? From Deloitte’s perspective, I would think it’s more advantageous to have you start at a later date and have a smooth on boarding process than have you start now but have to take a lot of time off
I haven’t had the chance to talk to them about it since it’s the weekend. I guess the issue is there’s so many unknowns right now in terms of how aggressive or metastic the cancer is or is not. So I don’t know if we’re talking a month to help him through surgery or dealing with a slow decline with no potential treatment over the course of multiple months. So I could maybe agree on a new date with them, but I assumed they won’t defer indefinitely you know?
Sorry to hear your family is going through this. Hope it is treatable and your brother overcomes it. Talk to Deloitte, if they can't be supportive when something this hurts you, maybe it's not the best place to be. You can always find a place to work. Family first, especially under the circumstances.
Sorry for your loss.
I don't see a problem with speaking to someone at Deloitte deferring your start date, not like anyone could have seen this coming
Not what I meant at all. PwC 3. Instigate much?
I switched firms because of a similar event in my life. I never in a million years would return to my old firm. Keep with Deloitte but let them know about your circumstances, I promise you they will not be cold or unprofessional - if anything I bet they will be very supportive and accommodating to somebody they just hired. Don’t think your problems with EY will go away. Stay the course, but give Deloitte an opportunity out to prove they are better to you than your old firm.
My understanding is there is no two week notice when leaving for another big 4...you are just asked to turn in your badge and laptop and it is over. Not sure if things have change but I would wait until the day you are actually ready to end your EY employment otherwise you will risk a lapse in benefits coverage.
That's fine but that is an anecdote - it is not policy.
Hope your brother makes a speedy recovery ! Praying for him
Sorry about this news. Please communicate this to Deloitte.
If Deloitte acts in the opposite of what everyone is suggesting above, then maybe they are not a company you should work for.
Good luck and hope things get better.
Good luck.
If Deloitte pushes back - send me your resume. :)
So sorry about your situation. Ask Deloitte to defer and use the merit that you hVe built with EY to get as much flexibility and time off as possible. Stay with EY until you have better peace of mind and understand the situation. Starting a new job under these circumstances could be extremely hard. When you start a new job you really need to give it your all for the first 2-3 months.
I would be honest with Deloitte and defer your start date. I just wouldn’t be comfortable starting a new job and having no built up goodwill to request flexibility.
You could take leave of absence. It is what it is.
I had a family member who went through cancer treatments and it was not easy and very drawn out. You have no idea how long it will take and the ups and downs are very difficult to deal with. I wouldn’t want to add the stress of a new job while going through this and honestly wouldn’t mind using this time to step a bit back in my career, at least in the beginning. That being said, it may take months if not years until you sense some sort of normalcy. So you may not be able to keep your career on hold for that long. What level are you? What are your reasons for switching to Deloitte? What is your family situation like? Are you expected to be the key person handling everything for your brother? These are all different factors in determining the right choice. Feel free to DM me with any questions. Sorry for what you are going through and I wish your brother lots of health to pull through.
Tell them you situation and ask if you can join 1-2 months from now
