It’s tough. You’ll need cash or a line of credit (if you can get it) to finance the cases. It’s not just the fact that you’ll have to go a while without making money yourself while paying maybe a staff member and the bills, you’ll also have to finance the cases, pay experts etc. It seems that most solos thrive on pre-lit settlements of small cases to keep some cash coming in and if a case has to go to lit then associate someone else in to cover the costs. But you still have to get the cases. If you can try cases then you can do the opposite and have a small shop that takes referrals from other lawyers who can’t try them and have cases that they couldn’t settle. But you’d have to have a track records of verdicts already for people to entrust you with their cases.
I just did it a year ago and have thrived. Takes a ton of planning and saving
I’m on the defense side and in SoCal. Unless you have the resources from the start, it’s a pretty rough road. Remember that defense counsel has the resources of the insurance companies behind them.
Plus here there is just so much competition. Not sure where you’re located maybe there’s less competition.
Most people I know start out doing either criminal or family to keep the lights on and to finance their PI cases. Seems to work well for them.
